Reading Journals
Introduction
This section of my portfolio includes reflections on key readings assigned throughout the course that had the most impactful to me. Each entry offers information and connects from the texts that increased my understanding of writing, research, and learning. I talk about how the readings influenced my thoughts to assignments and allow me to make connections. This deepened my critical thinking, and expanded my perspective on writing studies. This process has encouraged me to make connections between various academic concepts and apply them to both my writing projects and future goals in finance and business.
Dispositions Towards Learning by Jennifer Wells
Key points - Wells emphasizes how students’ attitudes and beliefs about learning influence their engagement and success. She introduces concepts like self-efficacy and how a student’s perception of their capabilities shapes their academic journey.
Personal relation - I connected this to my experience with Project 1, where understanding the value of the research process and believing in the end goal helped me push through initial struggles. The idea of "expectancy value" was valuaable to me when I started seeing the connections between sources and their relevance to my topic.
The Dark Side of Storytelling by Duncan
Key points - Duncan explains the downside of oversimplification when storytelling, especially in academic writing. His piece cautions against reducing complex topics into something surfacce level, thriving for a deeper engangment with the content
Reflection - Duncan's piece had a direct impact on how I selected my sources for Project 1. It forced me to be cautious when choosing sources that might oversimplify elementary writing into academic writing. I became more noticed when finding resources that had a balance of writing skills and development.
Conveying Conversation: Reflecting on Writing Project 2 by Annabel Long
Summary
Long talks about the importance of discussing with sources during the research process to get many other prerspectives and views to help build a deeper understanding of a topic
Reflection
Long's article taught me how to develop a more dynamic relationship with my sources. I noticed that key points in my sources such as memory and other executive functions were recurring across my research, leading to more meaningful connections in my worknet for Project 1.
Discourse Communities and Communities of Practice by Ann Johns
Key points - The article introduces the concepts of discourse communities and communities of practice, exploring how language use and communication patterns vary across different fields and groups. A discourse community is a group of people with shared goals and a common way of communicating
Reflection - I applied this concept to understand the different academic communities I’m part of, like my math classes and writing studies. I began to understand how each community has their own expectations and jargon which influenced my approach to writing in both academic and professional contexts.
These readings journals reflect my evolving point of view on research, writing, and learning. The readings provided the structure that helped me navigate complex topics and deepen my understanding of academic discourse. They’ve changed my approach to writing, making it more connected and open to new ideas.
